Terms of use
The Outside View · Last updated: October 23, 2026
These terms govern your use of The Outside View, available at outsideview.news and in our mobile apps (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the Service. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean the operator of The Outside View, reachable at contact@outsideview.news.
1. What The Outside View is
The Outside View is a free press-monitoring service. It follows the international press for the countries we cover and lists articles published by news outlets about them. For each article it shows the headline (or an English translation of it), the outlet's name, the picture published by the outlet, and a link to the original article on the outlet's own website. Members can follow countries, rate coverage, comment, and chat in private circles. Pages such as the “must-reads”, the stars given to an article and the way an outlet is described toward a country are editorial and automated assessments, explained on our method page.
2. Third-party articles and trademarks
The articles belong to their publishers and authors. We link to them; we do not host, copy or republish their text. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any publication named on the Service. Names, logos and pictures of outlets belong to their owners and appear only to identify the source. Reading an article may require a subscription or an account with the outlet; that is a matter between you and the outlet, and we do not bypass any paywall.
3. Automated assessments
Headline translations, article scores (stars), event groupings, topic labels and the stance of an outlet toward a country are produced with the help of automated systems, including a large language model, and may contain mistakes. They are opinions on the coverage, not statements of fact about any person or organisation, and they are not advice of any kind. If you see a wrong label, use the report link on the article or write to contact@outsideview.news.
4. Your account
To use the social features you must create an account with a valid email address and a display name (a pseudonym is fine; display names are unique). You must be at least 16 years old. You are responsible for keeping your password secret and for everything that happens under your account; tell us promptly if you think someone else is using it. You may have only one account, and you must not impersonate another person or organisation.
5. Content you post
Comments, ratings, circle messages, profile pictures and other content you post remain yours. By posting you give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to store, display, reproduce and distribute that content on the Service for as long as it is there, and to adapt it as needed to show it (for example, resizing a picture). You promise that you have the right to post it and that it does not break the law or anyone's rights. You must follow our Community guidelines. We may hide or delete content, and may suspend accounts, when we think a rule is broken. Readers can report content, and we review reports.
6. Circles
Circles are private groups created by members. The creator and the members are responsible for what is said in them. A circle's messages are visible to its members. A member who sees a rule being broken can report the sender; we may then read the reported messages. Gift links shared in a circle are provided by the outlets to their subscribers; use them only as the outlet allows.
7. What you may not do
- Use the Service for anything unlawful, or to harass, threaten or defraud anyone.
- Attempt to break, overload, scan or reverse-engineer the Service, or access it by automated means other than through the public pages and our published API usage by the official apps.
- Copy the Service's data in bulk, or resell it, without our written permission.
- Post malicious code, advertising or spam, or try to get around a suspension.
8. Removal requests
Publishers and anyone else who wants a link, a picture or an outlet removed can use the removal request page or write to contact@outsideview.news. Requests are reviewed promptly and honoured where justified.
9. Intellectual property
Except for the content of third parties and your own content, the Service, its design, software, scores and compilations belong to us and are protected by law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for your own non-commercial use. You may quote headlines and share links to our pages.
10. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from Account settings; your profile, comments, ratings, follows and subscriptions are then deleted. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the community guidelines, or that is used in a way that could harm others or the Service. We may also change or stop part or all of the Service at any time; since it is free, no refund is involved.
11. No warranty
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or complete, that every relevant article will be listed, or that links will keep working.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for loss of data, profits or reputation, arising from your use of the Service, nor for the content of third-party websites that we link to. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for gross negligence or intentional fault, or the rights consumers have under mandatory local law.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada applicable there. Disputes are brought before the competent courts of Quebec, without affecting any mandatory right you may have to go to the courts of your own place of residence as a consumer.
14. Changes and contact
We may update these terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and we will announce material changes on the Service. Using the Service after a change means you accept it. Questions: contact@outsideview.news.
